Evergreen City Ballet's Founding Artistic Director
Mr. Walthall received his formal dance training with a Ford Foundation Scholarship at the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet. Right after SAB, he became a Soloist Dancer with the Dutch National Ballet under Artistic Director Rudi Van Dantzig. He lived in Amsterdam for several years and went on to dance extremely varied and eclectic repertory, including works by some of the world's foremost choreographers.
After a season as the Principal Resident Guest Artist with the National Ballet of Spain, Mr. Walthall returned to Seattle, Washington and danced as a Principal Dancer for the Pacific Northwest Ballet under the direction of Kent Stowell and Francia Russell. After his performing career with PNB, Mr. Walthall performed throughout the United States as a guest artist and spent one season as a Principal Guest Artist with Ballet Austin under the direction of Lambros Lambrou.
Throughout his career, Mr. Walthall has studied, worked, and performed with some of the most prestigious figures in the dance world. He has performed with dance legends such as Rudolf Nureyev, Alexander Gudenov, Wayne Eagling, Merle Parke, Leslie Collier, and Karin Kain, in major cities including New York City, London, Paris, Rome, Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Jakarta, and Hong Kong.
In 1986, Mr. Walthall danced the male lead in the cinematic version of the STOWELL/SENDAK/BALLARD movie NUTCRACKER: THE MOTION PICTURE. Mr. Walthall has taught at various dance techniques at Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet Austin, The Hong Ballet, The Washington Ballet, and San Antonio Dance Theater. After his retirement from the stage Mr. Walthall graduated cum laude from The University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Education. In 1994, he became the Artistic Director of The Evergreen City Ballet where he designed, choreographed, directed, and taught for the Academy and Company for 14 years.
Mr. Walthall was a member of Pacific Northwest Ballet's 25th Anniversary Committee which included directors from New York City Ballet, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and some of the most prominent artists in the world of dance. He has also been mentioned in several listings of notable personalities throughout the world including Who's Who in America and The Dictionary of American Biography.
In 2011, Mr. Walthall became the Artistic Director of Gwinnett Ballet Theatre where he continued the tradition of excellence in dance education and performance in the metro Atlanta area. He expanded GBT's repertoire with his unique and original ballets, including Journey and Pictures. In addition to his long list of career and life achievements, Mr. Walthall graduated from the University of Arizona with an MFA in Dance.
Mr. Walthall continues to teach, inspire, and mentor students across the country, including his former student and current ECB Artistic Director Bennyroyce Royon. In October of 2019, Evergreen City Ballet celebrated his legacy in dance and became a member of Evergreen City Ballet's Advisory Board.
